Mr. End of an Age

It seems like yesterday that... no, I'm not thinking of when Bug was born and then pronounced incurably bad - and, no I'm not talking about when we thought Bug had been poisoned by a disillusioned follower - and, no I'm not refering to the time when we, like Frodo at the Crack of Doom, tried, considering only the greater good, to rid this world of evil ...I'm recalling to mind the day that Bug invented a device that would change the lives of biometrically identified Dachshunds everywhere.

Of course his dream (this was, in fact his second dream - his first born on the day Bug vowed never to work a day is his long little life) has come to a sad end. But why! Why did it have to end!

I can easily recall Bug's first day on the job - I remember it because it was a particularly cold day; I remember good times, bad times, even some wierd times; I remember Bug's first promotion, and I rember his rise to the top.

But why did it all come crashing down? I feel certain it was not a result of Bug's management style, nor his relationship management; definitely not his PR strategy, his crazy product ideas, or even his occassionl reclusive spells.

Though I think we'll have to leave it a mystery why Bug, in the end, had to pack it up, he'll remember the good times.

DES: The Dachshund Ear System

The Dachshund's ears are quite prominent and rightly so: they are one of the most critical systems aboard the Dachshund vessel and they serve in many roles.

The ears are swept back for transport while trotting...

Radar: Orange Alert - the ears are finely tuned for sensing far off threats.

Red Alert! At this alert level there's no messing around; the tongue retracts into its hatch and all energy is diverted to the ears which can pinpoint suspicious behavior at over 250 yds.

At full gallop the ears unfurl and help to steer the dachshund, much like a cheetah's tail, as he accelerates to speeds, upwards of 8 mph.

Finally, the ears serve as a braking mechanism; they are parachutes much like the space-shuttle uses when landing.

We arrive on this seemingly innocuous scene, greeted by two cheekily small lux-life animals.

And then, seemingly out of nowhere, the short-legged long one turns on the fluffy white one: the evil long-eared one engages his demon laser eye to cause the tiny, fluffy-eared one to contort and writhe in horror at the merciless evil of the long dog.

Beware, owners of these long, short-haired, beady-eyed dogs. They might turn on you at any time.

Much of life and Dachshund rearing is about how you look at things. One day Bates and I found that our Dachshund had chewed a hole in his bed and subsequently completely burrowed into it.

I choose to understand this not as the Dachshund shredding his bed in a fit of rage at being left in his crate for a few hours, but rather as an instance of creative problem solving: Bug was given a bed but would have preferred a rabbit warren.

The Dachshund went South. We went East. He was sent to Florida back in the Fall to further his studies and, for once, make something of his lazy life. Apparently, he was not fully supportive of our decision (see picture below - note: most Egyptologists will have you believe that the Sphinx is a man with a lion's body; we have reason to believe otherwise)

to send him away and has sent some pictures, characteristic of what we hoped would be his diligent new life in the subtropics.

He did not include a note with the pictures and it is difficult to estimate the progress of his studies from the pictures, so I must assume that all is going well for now.

I am hoping to see Bug again during his Summer vacation. Until that time we'll be here.

From what we've pieced together we believe that he's been accepted to some sort of baby Dachshund training camp. We're not sure where it is or really what's going on at this point. We'll keep you updated.

One of the best character traits of the Dachshund is his sacrificial love. The Dachshund remains concerned and on-guard at all times. He does so, not because he gets pleasure out of barking at anything that moves or does not move, not because every passing object deserves suspicion, not because he is a senslessly paranoid creature; the Dachshund never lets down his guard because of his inalienable duty to protect those around him.

Let's just consider that at any moment during these seemingly benign Easter photos, a bear or some other unknown terror could charge forth from the azalea bush in the background there, leaving little recourse for the Dachshund except to dispatch the threat.

Living with a Dachshund, it's become pretty easy to spot the tell-tale signs that the Dachshund is on duty: The ears are set high in full banner, able to pick up threat-sounds at great distances; the baby claws are extended and the paws are squirmy; the eyes, the eyes tell the real story of living without a moment of relaxation: the brow is permanently furrowed and the eyes are deeply concerned.

The result of the Dachshund's vigilant mien? Take a look at the humans in the snaps above: they are eerily sedated, without a care in the world. As always, we thank you, Bug.

You may remember Bug's modeling debut (I told him he'd never succeed, that he didn't have the legs for modeling). Well, he's back in the game, but this time he doesn't want to be confused with the petty, superficial model crowd: he's now got a pithy political message.

As Bug's agent (for now - he's told me he's looking elsewhere because "I don't believe in him") I'll go ahead and try to promote his message.

You may be aware of a thing called Human Rights. When Human Rights were first discovered they comprised things like Life and Liberty; well, Human Rights have evolved somewhat as scientists have unearthed new rights, like Health Care and Vacation Days. Bug is promoting one of these new fundamental, intrinsic prerogatives: The right to baby Dachshunds. Every man, woman, and child deserves to have, along with Food, Shelter, and Vacation, the rewarding companionship of a baby Dachshund.

I'm not sure why no one thought of this before. After Bug mentioned it, it seemed so obvious. Seriously, do you know anyone that does not merit a baby Dachshund? Thank you.

Having accidentally captured this snap of The Beast recently, I felt compelled to investigate The Bug's lineage in hopes that I might come to understand what the HECK he is doing here!!

In order to conduct my search I had to consult the German National Genealogical Archive, since after all, he is German (see post explaining the origin of his breed name here).

I thought I'd start with his close relatives: I pulled up an image of his grandmother.

Ok, the long neck is clearly part of what we're seeing here but this doesn't seem to tell us much. I moved on and pulled up an image of his great uncle.

Hmm, this image seems to make a bit more sense. The Bug is typically horizontally longy, not vertically longy. I had to go deeper into Bug's family. I pulled this image of his great great grandfather on his mother's side.

Alright, here we see the long neck used to reach leaves in high places. I think we're getting close. I next found an image of Bug's great (x5) grandfather, once-removed.

Same sort of thing here. Very long neck. Certainly longer than Le Bug's. The last relative I came across actually bore striking resemblance to our little Animal, exhibiting the same long neck, tail, talons, and red-lizardy features.

Well, as many of you have heard, Bug recently traveled to the great nation of Florida. While in Florida, he kept mentioning how good he was at Ping Pong; He went so far as to say that Ping Pong skills ran in his family, that his frail German grandmother could beat us in Ping Pong, that his Buddhist cousin could beat us with his eyes closed, ... you get the idea.

Eventually we took him up on the challenge.

He surveyed the table, complained of a few irregularities, and we got started.

Next came a great surprise: Bug couldn't play Ping Pong. He couldn't even hold the paddle! The picture below, was forced upon us by Bug - He's not really playing. If you look carefully you can see Bates' hands holding the sad sap.

I don't know why we ever believed that Bug could play Ping Pong. It should have come as no surprise since 80% of all Dachshunds do not, by any stretch of the imagination, know how to play.

Before the court ordered us to take in and raise up the Dachshund known as Bug, we blindly carried on, going about our days as if there were no badgers living in our couch. Bug has enlightened us.

I (Bates) came upstairs this afternoon to find THIS scene unfolding before my eyes. As you can see by Bug's pajamas peeking out, this nap was premeditated. He forced Will to eat enough chocolate to induce a food coma and then arranged himself just so on the couch.

Well, Bug woke up this morning to the sound of water gushing into the apartment. While everyone else stood around screaming, he maintained the doggedly cool composure of Cool Hand Luke. He donned his foul-weather gear, complete with reflective-safety-strip-mechanism-for- the-safety-of-small-to-very-small-animals, and raced about setting up pots to rein in the deluge. Thank you Bug. Once again we owe you our lives.
